Breaks and Gas Pedals: How Your Body Can “Brake” Without You Realizing
The wind wasn’t too strong as I biked home today. Sun shining ☀️, a little breeze 🌬️, and surprisingly, the ride felt good. I felt grateful—small moments like this don’t happen often.
At the lights, I hit the brakes. Standing still, I noticed the subtle pressure on the tires, almost as if the brakes were lightly engaged even when I wasn’t pressing them. That’s when it clicked: sometimes our bodies work the same way.
In yoga and nervous system theory, we talk about the autonomic nervous system—the balance between the sympathetic (active, alert) and parasympathetic (rest, recovery) systems. When this balance is off, the body can feel like it’s “braking” too much or “stuck on gas.” ⛽️
🚴♀️ Cycling as a metaphor
Think about it like cycling: if your brakes are partially on, pedaling feels heavier, progress is slower, and even simple motion takes more effort. In the body, this shows up as difficulty focusing, staying alert, or resting properly.
Too much parasympathetic activity? Concentrating or acting can feel impossible.
Too much sympathetic activity? Relaxing and switching off can feel just as hard.
How to Reset
The good news: there’s a simple tool you can use anywhere, anytime—your breath.
Here’s a quick exercise:
Inhale naturally.
Exhale slowly, twice as long as your inhale.
Repeat 3–5 times, noticing your body relax and your mind settle.
Even this small reset helps your nervous system find balance, clears mental fog, and gets you moving—literally or figuratively.
Other tools like meditation, affirmations, or gentle movement work too, but this is often the fastest and easiest way to “release the brakes.”
Sometimes life feels like cycling with one foot on the brake. Gratitude, reflection, and simple resets like these can help to get us moving again.
Hope this helps!
