Learning Is a Process — Part 3: Returning to the Self

Learning Is a Process — Part 3: Returning to the Self

Learning is a process. I feel learning can be an interesting process. In this series, I aim to explore several facets of this fascinating becoming.

Learning & growing can be scary. I previously wrote about this in the first part of this series I wrote about daring to begin.

In the second part I took a deep dive into trusting the process.

In this part I zoom into the return to ourselves.

"Tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe 'vasthānam"
—
Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtras I.3
"Then, the seer abides in their true nature."

From Doing to Being

There comes a point in the learning journey when striving softens.

After the discipline (tapas), the reflection (svādhyāya), and the letting go (vairāgya), we arrive—not at a finish line, but at a quiet returning.

This return is śānti—a peace that arises not from certainty, but from inner alignment.

In this space, we are no longer trying to become. We are remembering who we already are.

Abiding in the Self

The Yoga Sūtras speak of the moment when the fluctuations of the mind settle, and the seer (draṣṭṛ) abides in their own essence (svarūpa). This is not a static state, but a living awareness—a steady flame within the motion of life.

Here, the process of learning becomes devotion.
The practice becomes prayer.
The journey becomes home.

Sacred Work Without Attachment

The Gītā reminds us again:

योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय।
सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्योः समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते॥

yoga-sthaḥ kuru karmāṇi saṅgaṁ tyaktvā dhanañjaya
siddhy-asiddhyoḥ samo bhūtvā samatvaṁ yoga ucyate

“Established in yoga, perform your actions, Dhananjaya (Arjuna),
abandoning attachment, and remaining balanced in success and failure.
This evenness of mind is called yoga.”
(
Bhagavad Gītā 2.48)

When we move from this inner balance, the process becomes enough. We’re no longer defined by results, but rooted in intention.

Mantra for Integration

To support this space of inner return, here is a final mantra for stillness and connection:

"Om shāntiḥ shāntiḥ shāntiḥ"
Peace. Peace. Peace.

Three layers: peace in the body, peace in the mind, peace in the world.

Let it close the circle of learning with grace.

The Path Continues

Learning, like yoga, is never truly finished. It moves with us through the seasons of life—deepening, softening, challenging, revealing. The more we trust the process, the more we return to the Self.

And with each return, we begin again—wiser, steadier, more whole.
