Breaking the Mold: My Journey as a Female Pandita in Today’s World

Being a pandita in today’s world is an evolving dance between tradition and transformation. I am officially trained and deeply committed, having studied the 16 sanskaras and assisted at nearly 10 weddings. This year I even led my first ceremony outside the family home. Yet, I still face moments of confusion and resistance—sometimes subtle, sometimes not.

For example, I’m often expected to perform rituals in Hindi or Hindoestani—even when a Dutch translation was explicitly requested. At times, the environment feels less welcoming than I imagined, with certain elders holding onto outdated ideas about women’s roles, sometimes voicing these ideas in ways that feel dismissive or even hostile.

It’s exhausting. The investment—emotionally, physically, spiritually—is immense. I don’t seek monetary reward, but the time and energy poured into learning and showing up can feel overwhelming, especially when recognition or support feels conditional.

Despite this, I keep showing up because this calling is real. My presence challenges old patterns, yes. But it also opens space for new ways of being sacred. The path of a female pandita today is not just about rituals; it’s about reshaping what sacred leadership looks like and creating room for those of us who don’t fit traditional molds.

One thing I want to be clear about: menstruation is not a sign of impurity or imbalance. I heard this idea casually dropped on a podcast recently, and it hurt deeply. How can someone who doesn’t live this reality speak so lightly on it? Women’s bodies are holy, powerful, and deserving of respect—period. This topic deserves a fuller discussion, and I plan to explore it more in depth in a future post.

This blog is not just my story. It’s an invitation to question, to learn, and to shift how we understand spirituality and gender. To create sacred spaces where every voice, every body, and every path is honored.

Thank you for reading and holding space. If you’re on a similar path or feeling called to rethink tradition, know you’re not alone. I’ll be sharing more reflections soon, diving deeper into these important conversations. Together, we can co-create a more inclusive dharma.
