Breath & Voice: How Pranayama Unlocks Your Authentic Expression
Happy International Day of Yoga! In honour of this special day I hereby humbly present to you; this blog dedicated to pranayama and how it can unlock your authentic expression (not just your voice, but perhaps your sound in your way in the broadest sense)!
Pranayama is often thought of as breathing exercises in stillness, but it’s deeply connected to voice and self-expression. Whether you sing, speak, or simply want more confidence, many ancient breathwork techniques actually support your authentic voice.
Voice and the Nervous System
Anxiety or tension can tighten your breath and throat, making the voice shaky or weak. This reflects the state of your nervous system, not just your vocal cords.
Breath as a Bridge
Pranayama balances the nervous system by connecting the grounded lower chakras with the expressive throat chakra. This helps the voice become freer, clearer, and more confident.
Simple Breath Practices for Your Voice
- Ujjayi Breath: Soft constriction in the throat creates a calming sound and strengthens vocal control.
- Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril): Balances mental focus and calms the nervous system.
- Brahmari (Bee Breath): Humming calms the throat and relaxes vocal tension.
This breathwork not only enhances singing but helps you speak your truth with confidence and calm.
