Life Lessons from a Disappointing Day at the Beach

Life Lessons from a Disappointing Day at the Beach

Hello, lovely readers! I’m back again with another raw, real-life story. Today, I want to share a lesson I learned from an unexpected (and slightly frustrating) experience.

It’s the kind of day when everything seems to go wrong, but in the end, it becomes the perfect reminder of something important.

In life, just like in yoga, we learn that everything has a purpose—even when we don’t understand it in the moment. This experience, though random, was a gentle reminder of that truth.

The Journey There... Not So Smooth

I had planned to attend an event today that I was really looking forward to. It had a yoga component, an informative session, and an opportunity to meet other people who shared similar interests. The event was at the beach—a peaceful setting for yoga and mindfulness, right?

I packed my bag with sunscreen, water, and good vibes (because the sun was really intense for Dutch standards), and set out, thinking I was fully prepared for the day.

But, as life often does, it threw in a little detour.

Parking Woes... and Life’s Detours

The heat was real, and even with the car AC blasting, I could feel myself burning up as I made my way to the beach.

The drive, which I expected to take around 30 minutes, turned into an hour-and-a-half ordeal, with traffic that felt like it would never end.

Once I arrived, I found that parking was completely packed. The garage was full. The streets were full. I called the event organizers, but alas, even the parking spots around the beach were closing up.

No matter how many laps I made, no matter what I tried, I couldn’t get to the event.

It was a real exercise in patience and surrender (hello, yoga lessons in action!). After realizing that walking would be impossible due to the lack of available parking, I decided to turn around and go home.

A Little Disappointment, A Lot of Perspective

I felt disappointed, of course. I had been looking forward to this event. But as I drove back, with every slow-moving car and every busy street, I took a few deep breaths and reminded myself of something I often talk about in my yoga and coaching sessions: detours are part of the journey.

I wasn’t meant to be at that event today, and that’s okay. Life doesn’t always go according to plan, and that’s where we get to practice trust.

Trust that even in moments of frustration, there’s a reason. Maybe it was a sign to slow down. Maybe it was a reminder to let go of control.

The Yoga of Patience and Surrender: Ishvarpranidhan

This experience reminded me of a central Niyama* in yoga:

(*Niyama’s can be defined as a set of guidelines for self-discipline and personal growth.

These niyama’s are part of the eightfold path in Yoga and form the foundation (1st part)  along with the Yama’s. I might share another blog on this topic.)

Ishvarpranidhan—the practice of surrendering to the divine, to the flow of life, and to a higher power. It’s about releasing the need for control and trusting the process, no matter where life takes us.

Ishvarpranidhan is about letting go of our attachment to specific outcomes and embracing the present moment as it is.

Today, I practiced this by accepting that my plans didn’t unfold as expected. I let go of the frustration, accepted the detour, and trusted that everything happens for a reason.

Life is full of unexpected moments, but it’s how we respond to them that truly matters, imo.

What Do You Think?

What do you think we can learn from this?

Are you able to let go when things don’t go as planned, or do you find it hard to surrender?

If you’re feeling stuck in your own life journey, know that it’s okay to experience detours. They’re part of the process.

And if you need support in navigating these moments with more mindfulness and grace.

Feel free to reach out for a coaching session—I’d love to help you embrace life’s journey, no matter where it leads.

End Note:

I may not have made it to the beach today, but I learned something valuable: that everything happens for a reasonIt’s all part of the flow, even when the road gets bumpy.

So, here’s to trusting the process, finding peace in the detours, and continuing to move forward—one mindful step at a time.

How do you trust the process?
