The Power of Resilience: Yoga for Refugee Women

Introduction: My Volunteering Journey

As many of you know, I’ve been volunteering for some time now as a yoga teacher at a refugee center here in the Netherlands. It’s been a truly rewarding experience, and I’d love to share some insights from this journey with the hope that they inspire you, just as they’ve inspired me.

Challenges Faced

The women I teach come from diverse backgrounds, most fleeing war zones and seeking safety. Their resilience is remarkable, but it hasn’t been without challenges.

For instance, my “classroom” is a shared space, a former office with neon lights, a TV, and various pieces of furniture. Not exactly a calming yoga studio, but I’ve learned to make the best of it.

The language barrier is another hurdle, and there are some misconceptions about yoga itself that I’ve had to navigate. Despite these obstacles, I’ve found teaching these women to be incredibly fulfilling.

A Safe Space: Yoga for Self-Care

I started this volunteer work with a clear goal: to uplift, inspire, and provide a safe space for these women. In my yoga class, I aim to give them me-time—a rare moment where they can focus solely on themselves.

A chance to breathe, move, and just be without worrying about everything else going on in their lives. For women who’ve experienced unimaginable hardship, having a space to express themselves freely is empowering.

A Sense of Connection: Laughter Without Words

One of the most touching moments for me came while teaching the cat-cow stretch. I explained it without words, relying on gestures and movements.

What followed was nothing short of magical—laughter, exchanged glances, and an unspoken understanding between the women. It reminded me of how deep our connections can be, even without language.

It was a shared moment of joy, a reminder that we all communicate on a deeper level, no matter our background or circumstances.

Have you ever had a moment where laughter or a shared glance felt like a form of communication in itself? It’s those moments that transcend words and remind us of our shared humanity.

Finding Resilience

What continues to inspire me every time is the strength of these women. Despite the trauma they’ve endured—fleeing war zones, adjusting to new lives, and working hard to create a sense of safety—they are constantly finding ways to smile, laugh, and support each other. They are truly a testament to the power of resilience, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of their journey.

Reflecting on Your Own Resilience

As I reflect on these experiences, I want to encourage you to think about your own moments of resilience.

What brings you peace in chaotic moments?

How do you find strength when faced with adversity? Sometimes, it’s the smallest actions, like breathing deeply or sharing a laugh, that help us navigate even the toughest situations.

Take Action

I hope this post has given you a glimpse into the transformative power of yoga, resilience, and connection.

If you’re inspired by these stories, consider exploring yoga as a tool for self-care.

Whether it’s following a class, volunteering as a karma yogi, or simply taking a few minutes each day to breathe and stretch, I encourage you to create your own space of calm, even amidst chaos.

If you’re looking for ways to give back or make a difference, consider volunteering. The impact you can make on someone’s life—no matter how small—can be life-changing for both of you.

Keeping life in motion.
See you in the next blog.
Take care, namaste 🙏
