Challenging Judgemental Culture Around Dance

Challenging Judgemental Culture Around Dance

Unfortunately, there exists a judgemental culture around dance, especially when it comes to how and who can dance. For many, the idea of "appropriate" dance is still highly gendered. Historically, certain types of dance have been labeled as "for women only" (e.g., belly dance, contemporary dance), while others are considered more masculine (e.g., breakdancing, hip-hop). This pigeonholing restricts the true essence of dance as a form of expression — regardless of gender or type.

There is also a strong societal belief that certain types of dance aren’t “spiritual enough” or “serious enough,” especially dances like salsa or bachata, which are often associated with more sensual movements. Yet, for me, these forms of dance are just as sacred as any other. They provide a space for personal freedom, joy, and connection, which are deeply spiritual elements in their own right.

Now, I’m not here to defend anything about my personal choices, but I do want to share that I’ve been often met with the comment, “It’s such an interesting mix, isn’t it? Spirituality and dancing.” And while some might consider it unusual, I believe that these forms of expression are deeply connected — they both serve as ways to open ourselves to the divine.

For me, combining dance with my spiritual path isn’t “out of place”; it’s a natural and sacred blending of energies. The connection between dance and spirituality doesn’t need defending; it simply is.

And let me be clear: I’m not merging these worlds to provoke or rebel. I’m doing it because they already belong together

In many ancient traditions — including my own — movement, ritual, and spirituality were never separate. Somewhere along the way, people started creating false divisions between the sacred and the sensual, between spirit and expression. But I don't see them as opposites. I see dance as devotion. Movement as mantra.

My practice, whether in a sari or dancing barefoot or with dancing shoes on, is grounded in reverence. And I’m here to show — not ask — that this union is not only possible, it’s powerful.
