New Beginnings: 5 tips to gain comfort in discomfort
New beginnings—they seem so amazing, yet they also come with a sense of excitement…and maybe even a little fear. At least, that’s how I feel.
Beginnings can sometimes feel overwhelming.
They have a way of questioning my current state of mind. They hold up a mirror to my thoughts and make me reflect on the unfamiliar path ahead.
Today, I want to dedicate this post to exploring the uneasiness that often accompanies new beginnings. It’s something that’s been discussed in books, articles, and even yoga scriptures.
New beginnings bring with them new situations—things that are unknown, and let’s face it, unknown things can be scary. But they also mark a rite of passage, a transition that often comes after an ending.
Though I’m trying not to sound too cryptic, what I’m really saying is: New beginnings can be stressful. And as mentioned in the scriptures, every change brings with it some stress.
But stress on its’ own doesn’t have to be negative. In fact, stress—when approached with the right mindset—can actually be a positive force.
In this post, I’d like to share some tips on how to navigate new beginnings, supported by both yoga wisdom and scientific research. Here are 5 tips that you can apply to any new situation:
1. Focus on Grounding Practices to Ease the Mind
New beginnings can create a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. One effective way to manage this is through grounding techniques.
In yoga, grounding is about connecting with the present moment and calming the mind.
You can encourage practices like deep breathing (such as Nadi Shodana, or alternate nostril breathing) or simply sitting in a comfortable position and focusing on feeling the earth beneath you.
These practices calm the nervous system, reduce anxiety, and allow you to feel more centered in the face of uncertainty.
Tip: Set aside 5–10 minutes a day for grounding exercises, especially in the morning or before any stressful activity. This practice helps ease feelings of unease and allows you to approach new beginnings with more clarity.
2. Embrace the Power of Small, Incremental Progress
The feeling of a new beginning can be overwhelming because everything feels like it needs to change right now. But the truth is, it’s often the small, incremental steps that make the biggest impact.
From a scientific perspective, small achievements build momentum and reduce stress by creating a sense of accomplishment. This principle is often referred to as the “progress principle”.
Tip: Break your goals into smaller, manageable tasks, and focus on completing one small action at a time. Each completed task will boost your confidence and reduce the overwhelming feeling of trying to do everything at once.
3. Adopt the "Beginner's Mind" (Shoshin)
In yoga and Zen Buddhism, there’s a concept called Shoshin—the "beginner’s mind." This mindset encourages approaching each new situation with curiosity, openness, and a sense of wonder, rather than with fear or judgment.
It’s about letting go of expectations and embracing the unknown as a chance to learn, grow, and evolve.
Tip: When facing a new beginning, try to approach it with a "blank slate" mentality. Suspend judgment, forget what you think you know, and allow yourself to see things with fresh eyes.
This mindset helps remove the pressure to be perfect and invites more opportunities for growth.
4. Practice Self-Compassion and Acceptance
New beginnings are often accompanied by self-doubt. You might find yourself questioning if you’re doing things right or if you’re “good enough” for this new chapter.
Practicing self-compassion—treating yourself with kindness during moments of struggle—can help break the cycle of negative self-talk.
According to psychological research, self-compassion improves resilience and emotional well-being, especially during times of change.
Tip: When feelings of doubt arise, pause and speak to yourself as you would a good friend. Offer reassurance and remind yourself that it's okay to not have everything figured out immediately. Growth takes time, and it’s okay to take small steps.
5. Create a Ritual to Mark the Transition
A ritual can be a powerful way to honor a new beginning and help ease the discomfort of change. It provides structure and meaning, helping you mentally "shift" into the new chapter.
This could be something as simple as lighting a candle, journaling about your hopes for this new phase, or setting intentions for the future.
Tip: Create a personal ritual that symbolizes your transition. It could be a physical action (like stretching or yoga) or a symbolic gesture (such as a new affirmation). This act of marking the transition allows you to consciously step into the next phase.
Conclusion
New beginnings can be a mix of excitement, uncertainty, and a touch of fear. But they’re also opportunities for growth and transformation.
By embracing the uneasiness, grounding yourself in the present, and taking small, mindful steps forward, you can navigate any new chapter with more clarity and confidence.
Remember, it's okay to feel unsure at first. In fact, it's part of the process. Whether you lean on grounding practices, adopt a beginner’s mindset, or simply give yourself the grace to take it one step at a time, you’re already on the path to growth.
