Why High Breathing Happens & How to Ground Yourself
In my yoga classes, many students notice their breath rising high into the chest, especially during stress or panic. This "high breathing" can increase tension and make it hard to relax. Today, I want to share why this happens and how grounding your breath can help restore calm.
What Is High Breathing?
High breathing is shallow, quick breath limited to the upper chest. It’s part of the body's fight-or-flight response, signaling alertness and preparing us for action. But when it becomes habitual, it leads to anxiety, tension, and disconnection from the body.
The Energetic Connection
From an energetic perspective, high breathing disconnects us from the root chakra (Muladhara), which grounds us in safety and stability. The breath remains in the upper chakras, creating imbalance and a feeling of “floating” or being ungrounded.
How to Ground Through Breath
Here are simple tools to bring your breath—and your energy—back down:
- Exhale fully: Let go of held breath to reset your system.
- Feel your belly: Place your hands on your belly, breathe deeply into it, expanding on the inhale and softening on the exhale.
- Humming breath: Create a gentle humming sound during the exhale to calm the nervous system.
By returning energy to the lower chakras, you help balance your entire system—body and mind.
