Khichdi: From Chaos to Comfort 🌾
The Magic of Khichdi: Wholesome Food for Body and Mind 🍲✨
Today, I’d like to share with you a wholesome, nutritious, and deeply comforting staple food that has been loved by generations: Khichdi.
Mentioned in Ayurvedic texts and used in yoga’s shatkarma practices (the six cleansing rituals described in ancient texts like Hatha Yoga Pradipika), khichdi is often made in Asian households when someone isn’t feeling their best. It’s easy to prepare, easy to digest, and can be made all in one pan—saving both time and cleanup.
What is Khichdi?
The word Khichdi (pronounced Khee-dge-ree) roughly translates to a “mess” or “chaotic mash-up,” reflecting its simple combination of ingredients:
Whole rice grains
Lentils (moong dal is most common)
How to Make It
Wash and soak the rice and lentils for a few hours—preferably overnight.
Ratio: Start with 1:1 (rice to lentils) or slightly more rice if the lentils cook faster.
Cook on medium-low flame 🔥.
Add a pinch of salt and about ¼ teaspoon turmeric 🥄.
Stir occasionally and keep an eye on it.
Optional extras:
Tempering with cumin, black pepper, or mustard seeds supports digestion.
If tolerated, onion and garlic can be added.
For a traditional Ayurvedic kick, a pinch of asafoetida (hing) can work wonders.
And voilà—your Khichdi is ready! Comfort in a bowl, nourishing both body and mind.
Health Benefits of Khichdi
From an Ayurvedic perspective:
Light, easy to digest, and balancing for all three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha).
Often used in cleansing and detox protocols due to its simplicity and digestibility.
From a modern scientific perspective:
Provides complete plant-based protein when combining rice and lentils.
Rich in complex carbohydrates and fiber, gentle on the gut.
Turmeric adds anti-inflammatory benefits thanks to curcumin.
Cumin and asafoetida aid digestion and reduce bloating.
Khichdi is more than just food—it’s a nourishing ritual, especially on days when your body needs care or during mild cleansing routines.
BONUS: Eat with your hands for more added benefits. (Stay tuned for more on this topic!)
I hope you found this helpful! I know it’s a different topic from the more physical and philosophical yoga and breathwork posts I usually share, but nourishing your body is just as essential as moving it.
Stay tuned for the next blog about the relation of the vocal cords and yoga, and how breathwork can support your voice and mind.
Keeping life in motion.
See you in the next blog.
Take care. Namaste 🙏
